How This One New Testament
Practice can Revolutionize the Fellowship, Unity, and Commitment of Your Local
Church “Frustrated pastor in
main line denominational church quits, after discovering these simple New
Testament truths.” You should be experiencing these
things too! In fact, the whole church
should be experiencing them! Dear friend, Yes, it’s
true. 2000 years
after leaving us here on earth, we’ve come quite a long way from where Jesus left
things with His disciples. Overall, we’ve
kept the basic doctrines, and most Christians are in agreement on what these
are. Now, if you’re
worried that I’m another one of those crazies who advocates staying away from
certain foods, believe that Jesus was ONLY a man, or believe that you ought to
wear your beard a certain way, well, I’m NOT.
Don’t get me
wrong, much of what we practice today is right concerning communion or the Lord’s
Supper. I’m not here to say I’m right
and everyone else is wrong, but there
are some interesting things that I beg you to look at with me. The things that you’ll discover too are: ·
Jesus’s intention that the Lord’s Supper be a rite that not only
pointed back into the past, but as a shadow of the future ·
That
the Lord’s Supper is not merely there to remind us of what Jesus did, but to
remind Jesus of what he promised to do ·
That
the Lord’s Supper was established as a full meal, and was intended to grace us
to unify in the Holy Spirit ·
The
Lord’s Supper was THE reason for Christians to gather together… and MORE. You see, the
church has too often thought that it could do a better job at conducting the
Lord’s Supper, than what the Lord Himself thought it should be. Every
Sunday, Christians all around the world practice the Lord’s Supper with somberness
and solemnity as they reflect on the Lord’s death and consider their own sins. But is this the only attitude the New
Testament requires for the Lord’s Supper? But consider
what the Lord said concerning the Supper that HE HIMSELF WAS INSTITUTING in
Luke 22, “I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of
God.” This is kind of a future oriented
thing to say for such a solemn event… right? Again, what
about Jesus’s statement that, "I will not drink
again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." Then, after
the supper, He referred to the banquet yet again, saying, "I confer on you
a kingdom... so that you may eat
and drink at my table in my kingdom." This is
clearly pointing to His Second coming, when Christ finally consummates His
Kingdom! Yet, why don’t most churches practice
this, or view the Lord’s supper in this way? Can man-made tradition alone be blamed? I don’t know for sure, but it’s clear
to me that the Lord intended a lot more
for us than a token cracker, and a little Welch’s grape juice… I’ve experienced this New Testament
practice in action. Instead of a group
of Christians getting together and focusing ONLY on what Christ did, we come
together to focus on what Christ is GOING to do, and REMIND the Lord of His
promises to be with us. What better centerpiece for our Sunday meeting? Here’s How any Ordinary Church No
Matter What the Size or Doctrinal Persuasion Can Implement these Simple New
Testament Practices, and See New Testament Results A lot of people today like to
criticize tradition as dry and crusty, yet they always replace it with
traditions of their own. Instead, why do
we not simply sit back, and trust in those traditions laid down for us in the
New Testament? Simply believing them
with a child-like faith…
It’s like the difference between an
old wine skin, and a new wine skin. You
can pour all the emotion, sentiment, and good intentions into the conventional
way of doing things, and the “wine” may not come out tasting too bad. But it’s just like growing up on
government school food… if you grew up on it, then nothing tastes too bad! You simply
don’t know what GOOD wine ought to taste like, and so you settle for less. I’m telling you, the wine that Jesus
offered in His form of the Lord’s Supper tastes heavenly… good wine from a
GOOD wineskin! THIS DVD IS NOT FOR THE THEOLOGICALLY FAINT OF HEART! This DVD may leave you feeling like
you need to make some changes. It may
leave you feeling like you’re not getting all you could be getting from your
current way of doing things. It may even leave you asking even
more questions than what you had when you started! I know. Because I was there. I’m the one who helped produce this DVD. I’m not the author of the content, but was
persuaded by the author. I helped to produce this because I believe this message can help
revolutionize the fellowship life of many Christian churches out there. With the economy and the political scene
going the way it is, fellowship, and unity, are at no time needed more than
now. Believe me, I had for a long time,
wondered what could be keeping the churches I attended from truly achieving
intimacy. I had even attended one church
that tried to beauracratize it! Again, I know that true intimacy must
come from the heart, but man’s ways make everything more difficult. That’s why I want to share this with
you.
The teaching is done by Steve
Atkerson, a former associate pastor at a large Memphis area Baptist
Church. He’s now an elder and itinerate
teacher, who holds conferences on New Testament church life. There are also interviews from three other
elders and church planters to help give additional insight. FREE TO ANYONE WHO PURCHASES THE DVD: In addition to the DVD itself, it
